From "Camp near the ?????, May 29th, 1864." Addressed to Dear Brothers and Sister. Lined paper, folded into four, 3 pages written, with original envelope addressed to Cambridge, Vermont. "...the fourth of July will see it in our possession, and when this is done the war will be nearly at a end." He writes that they are within 18 miles of Richmond and still in the mach, that it is a "doomed city". He describes the fields, houses and country side and the destruction caused by the army on the march. Signed Wm. L. Ober (he was a musician with the 19th Mass. Vols.) "Camp 19th Mass. Vols. Jan. 2nd, 1864." To his sister, he talks about "true love grows out of a first esteem for the moral, mental, & physical goof qualities of the loved affi'd." He describers his new room with fireplace, no windows and a bed. He wonders, as it is the 2nd of January, what the year's experiences will be. He is hearing good news from every quarter. "everything looks forseeable for a speedy close of the war. The reds are soming into our lines every day. One (A telegrapher) says that it is impossible to keep the confederacy alive much longer.
